Col 2:20-23. Dan Kroon. Last week we celebrated the freedom that is found in Christ alone, and we recognised the need to guard that freedom against traditionalism and super-spiritualism. This week, in the following verses, we see the additional need to guard our freedom against asceticism. Paul warns us that, though such extreme physical self-denial can look 'holy' and pious, it’s only a superficial solution to our problems. It’s a religious, human, worldly fix. It’s on the wrong level. The real solution is, once again, Jesus Christ. It’s dying with him and rising with him. It’s repentance and faith. It’s the joy of living in freedom and grace. Jesus' death and resurrection (the gospel) is the only key to living the life we’re meant to live.
